The city\u2019s tap water, uniquely among major Japanese cities, is sourced exclusively from groundwater (rather than water filtered from lakes, rivers other bodies of water, as is common in other locales).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">This leads to the common refrain &#8220;In Kumamoto, bottled water comes out of the tap!&#8221; But is this true? We had a sommelier conduct a taste test to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>They Say Our Tap Water is Mineral Water&#8230;<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It\u2019s a common saying around here that &#8220;Kumamoto&#8217;s tap water is mineral water.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1153\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ba168f2c-4f3a-456b-a022-32e56c24b5ce.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">You&#8217;ll see it mentioned in various places, like Kumamoto City Hall&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1154\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/32b0e2fa-f196-492c-b649-3c7406aab1cd.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">as well as at Kumamoto Station, among many other places around the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Various places say that the water is clean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">But I have to wonder\u2014if it\u2019s really true, why would bottled mineral water even sell here?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">So, we decided to put it to the test with our editorial team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1155\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/9b930740-0e28-4c0c-ac9a-67e883b04ac1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">One sample was from the tap in my apartment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The other was Suntory\u2019s Natural Mineral Water from Aso. Both waters should originate (in theory) from Kumamoto, after all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We kept which was which a secret and had everyone taste both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Sample A was the mineral water, and Sample B was the tap water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1156\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/48ef85f3-e376-4487-9274-c466d914e1c0.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don&#8217;t have a very keen sense\u00a0of taste, but I can tell the answer! A is easier to drink! A is bottled water!\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1158\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/90b93563-ab31-419b-ae21-574ada50efc0.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s hard to tell because I was just having a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ough drop, but I think A is bottled water!\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">So, it was a unanimous decision: everyone preferred the taste of Sample A, correctly identifying it as the bottled water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">There must be quite a difference if you can tell even if you have poor taste buds, can tell by smell alone, or even while sucking on a cough drop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although I had my doubts, this result is <\/span><b>a bit troubling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It could impact Kumamoto&#8217;s reputation&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Let&#8217;s See What the Taste Pros Say<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">But let&#8217;s be clear: the folks at Higo Journal, including myself, aren&#8217;t connoisseurs when it comes to subtle taste differences.
