Out of curiosity about its length and wanting to learn more about the road and where it leads, I rode my moped from the Fukuoka prefectural border at Kahoku in Yamaga City, all the way to the border with Kagoshima in Minamata City.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>National Route 3<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1174\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/56933988-6862-43d4-84aa-415768f0ac79.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1499\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">National Route 3 is a familiar sight for those living in Kumamoto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It runs from Moji-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka all the way to Kagoshima City via Kumamoto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curious about its full extent, I decided to ride it from one end to the other. And I did it on a moped.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1175\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/fbfe788e-2de3-49a4-a659-bf64a797af8e.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">So, I hopped on my trusty Little Cub and headed to Kahoku.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1176\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/e2d1a935-1fab-4000-90bf-38cdcad267a6.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">This is where Kumamoto meets Fukuoka. It&#8217;s 42km to downtown Kumamoto from here. I was already feeling a bit tired and ready to turn back, but this was just the starting point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1177\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/fb368bc8-9c6f-4210-a2cb-2be3d41251b1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Although it&#8217;s covered in ivy and hard to make out, there is also a stone monument marked &#8220;Kumamoto-Fukuoka Prefectural Boundary.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">From here, I planned to follow Route 3 all the way to the border with Kagoshima Prefecture, stopping at roadside stations to enjoy some local delicacies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1178\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cc95d3a3-2da6-4c27-aee1-91beb5794b46.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">For the record, my odometer read &#8220;36,436 km&#8221; at the start. I wonder how many kilometers it will be from one end to the other&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Idyllic One-Lane Road<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1180\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1626c589-ec7f-4451-9493-8f70e8bf7738.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Riding along National Route 3, shortly after entering Kumamoto, you&#8217;ll find &#8220;Michi-no-Eki Kahoku.&#8221; It seemed too early for a break, so I rode past, though there were quite a few cars parked there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1181\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/c467b432-021c-4f1d-a36e-f137403ef2eb.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It already feels like I&#8217;ve been riding for a while, but it&#8217;s still 20 km to Kumamoto City and 63 km to Yatsushiro. The journey seems endless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1182\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/059d1252-605b-49b1-80e4-198d313243f8.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Living in Kumamoto City, you might think of Route 3 as a major road, but in Yamaga City, it&#8217;s just a single lane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I continued along this peaceful road, heading toward Kumamoto City.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>To Kumamoto City<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1184\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/57588eaf-cab2-4565-89f4-96a788f21ea6.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Passing through Ueki, entering Kumamoto City, and moving past the Nitori and Uniqlo at Yomogi, the road widens to two lanes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1185\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/c94f62b1-7a20-4f34-a468-0161de9e6c87.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuing straight, I passed straight through the heart of Kumamoto City, at Suidocho. This area, which intersects with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Densha-dori<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the main street along\u00a0which\u00a0the city tram runs), is quite busy with traffic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The familiar roads are somewhat comforting. From here, I went straight, crossing Choroku Bridge toward Uto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1186\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/81a9352e-5473-44b4-93ab-11956aeb664b.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In Minami-ku, Route 3 merges temporarily with National Route 57, another major route which cuts through the prefecture from east to west. This was news to me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">By this point, I was starting to feel quite tired.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Passing Through Uto and Uki to Yatsushiro<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1187\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/8bc5374d-c77d-4d9a-8c64-4f1265c60cf5.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Routes 3 and 57 stay merged up to Uto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Turning left here takes you along Route 57 towards Amakusa, while turning right keeps you on Route 3 heading for Yatsushiro and Uki.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1188\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/9513510d-972f-4c17-849f-b86375d3d315.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Here, the sign finally showed the distance to Minamata: &#8220;76 km.&#8221; Whether this is a moped-friendly distance is highly debatable, but I hoped to reach it before dusk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1189\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/b04d447f-b82d-418d-af83-7ed58433819b.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1139\" height=\"854\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Soon after, I entered Uki City. I had planned to stop at &#8220;Michi-no-Eki Uki&#8221; but missed the entrance and passed it by. The next roadside station is &#8220;Michi-no-Eki Ryuhoku&#8221; in Hikawa Town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1190\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/0601ffb0-5375-4dc3-bd82-fb902199e121.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">This is \u201cMichi no Eki Ryukoku\u201d (Roadside Station Ryukoku) located along Route 3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It&#8217;s hard to see in the photo due to the glare from the sun overhead, but the electronic board sadly reads &#8220;Closed Today.&#8221; I held back tears and continued on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1191\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/e3c43d37-9514-485d-b706-4604fc28d0c3.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">After a while, I entered Yatsushiro City. Seeing the smoke rise from the Nippon Paper factory, I truly felt I had arrived in Yatsushiro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1193\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/971ae87e-b90e-4acf-a277-bc9e76874f47.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Before heading into the city center of Yatsushiro, Route 3 forks left on the way to Minamata.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1194\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/0e6b6679-22c1-4964-874e-cd8ef46a9fd2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">From Hinagu, the route runs along the coast, offering stunning views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1195\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cd61bcad-c233-44af-994a-32dd0bbe74b3.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Continuing on, I encountered the Akamatsu Tunnel, the first tunnel since starting in Yamaga City.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Ashikita Town at the End of the Tunnel<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1196\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/eaa08feb-ef9b-46a3-a04b-b2e8d7e574e1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As I emerged from the tunnel, I arrived in Ashikita Town. Right away, I came across &#8220;Michi-no-Eki Tanoura,&#8221; but unfortunately, it was closed for the day. The sun was beginning to set. Could I make it to the edge of Minamata by sunset?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1197\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/edfa4d99-443b-4d1e-85a4-3d7476caf7e2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Another tunnel, &#8220;Sashiki Tunnel,&#8221; appeared. It was a bit intimidating to ride through on a moped because of its length. While there were no tunnels in the northern part of the prefecture, the south had several. The differences are quite intriguing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1198\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/a1ee4500-9374-496f-ac22-dd792a83462c.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1499\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">After passing through Ashikita Town, I stopped in Tsunagi Town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although not a roadside station, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Shikisai Products Store was open, so I took a short break.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Route 3 to the Minamata<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1199\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/645639a7-754f-4847-b3e3-b14a5b2d12fa.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Past Tsunagi Town, I finally reached Minamata City. At this point, I began to feel almost empty inside, almost as if in a meditative state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As the sun began to set, I began to wonder,\u00a0&#8220;what am I even doing?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1200\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/5523c352-2a1e-4697-8070-685ab4456124.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I tried stopping at &#8220;Michi-no-Eki Minamata,&#8221; but it had already closed for the day at 5 PM. So close, yet so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">However, I was determined to reach my final goal, the Kagoshima prefectural border at Minamata, and pressed on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><b>Endpoint of the Journey<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1201\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/a6bfbadd-cdaf-4232-a87f-d445f2e489ff.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Riding in the beautiful twilight, something came into my line of sight&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1202\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/7393d6b4-e37e-44a1-b68d-e49c88d6e3d7.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I found it! \u201cIzumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture!\u201d I had made it to the end of Route 3!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1203\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1fc04279-a791-4654-a18e-3a4e77bf1307.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I somehow managed to reach the end of Route 3 by sunset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1204\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/06ac8556-8560-42e7-8df8-fbd616107d65.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The odometer read \u201c36,583km\u201d upon arrival.
