With attractions like the double-arched “Megane-bashi” (literally “eyeglasses bridge”) and the stone temple gate, it’s a sight to behold.\u00a0Plus, the temple offers colorful and charming goshuin (temple stamps).<\/span><\/p>\n

Hogisan Sekisuiji Temple: A Soto Zen Temple Surrounded by Nature<\/b><\/h2>\n

Today, we\u2019re visiting Shimoharada Town in Hitoyoshi City to explore H\u014dgisan Sekisuiji.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hogisan Sekisuiji Temple was founded in 1417.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrounded by nature, it is very picturesque!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

From the gate to the temple, visitors cross a two-arched stone bridge, called the \u201cMeganebashi\u201d (literally, \u201cEyeglass Bridge\u201d). This bridge was built in 1854.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The stream flowing beneath it is crystal clear\u2014a truly soothing sight. A walk along the riverbank is highly recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After crossing the bridge and climbing some stairs, you come to the temple gate, which is actually a large hollowed-out rock.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This massive rock is large enough for people to pass through.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hogisan Sekisuiji Temple was also featured on the poster for the 68th Hitoyoshi Fireworks Festival, held in August 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many trees beyond the temple gate, and the area is full of nature. The cherry blossoms bloom pink in spring, there is fresh greenery in the summer, beautiful foliage<\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0in autumn, and snow in winter. Each season has its own charm.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Main Hall of the Temple is Open to Visitors<\/b><\/h2>\n

The main hall is open to the public. There\u2019s an intercom system to request entry, although making an appointment in advance is advised as it\u2019s not always staffed.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is also an exhibition room on the second floor, which is also open to visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goshuin Stamps and Wishing Wind Chimes<\/b><\/h2>\n

In the main hall, you can also receive a <\/span>goshuin<\/span><\/i> stamp. In addition to the regular <\/span>goshuin<\/span><\/i>, there is also a <\/span>kirie<\/span><\/i> (paper cutout) <\/span>goshuin<\/span><\/i>, which is still rare in Kumamoto.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goshuin<\/span><\/i> are issued as proof of worship or dedication at temples and shrines. There are various types of <\/span>goshuin<\/span><\/i> depending on the temple or shrine, and many people visit\u00a0 in order to collect <\/span>goshuin<\/span><\/i>!<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the <\/span>kirie goshuin<\/span><\/i> stamps are seasonal, such as this summer-exclusive one. They are very cute with light and playful colors evocative of the summer season. I heard that new limited-edition goshuin are available each season, so be sure to check them out.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the temple here you can also write your wish on a special wind chime.<\/span><\/p>\n

You pick a wind chime with a design you like and write your wish on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you’ve written your wish, you hang the wind chime in front of the main hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the wind blows, the sound of the chimes adds to the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n
