As you walk through the automatic doors, you see a sign. It says they are an endangered species according to the Ministry of the Environment!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from the eel, there are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ayu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sweetfish, and even Japanese sea bass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of Lake Ezu&#8217;s water actually comes from natural groundwater springs which filter up through the ground at a constant temperature year-round, which has an stabilizing effect on the lake&#8217;s temperature, providing a comfortable habitat for many species of fish.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seabass that swim upstream from the sea end up settling here because of these ideal conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The highlight here are the bitterlings or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tanago<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Japanese, which are small freshwater fish that inhibit slow-following or still waters and are from the same family as carps and minnows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though there are many types of bitterlings, several rare ones are on display here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fish in this photo are all bitterlings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1373 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924705-c47f9d00348009e0b88a5df5df5730a4-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924705-c47f9d00348009e0b88a5df5df5730a4-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924705-c47f9d00348009e0b88a5df5df5730a4.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s quite rare to see seven different types of bitterlings in one place!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0There is a type of bitterling called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seboshi tabira <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Japanese, which has a beautiful pattern resembling stars on its dorsal fin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1374 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924736-2ca9869a23d9ca8126bff7fb904f16f4-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924736-2ca9869a23d9ca8126bff7fb904f16f4-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924736-2ca9869a23d9ca8126bff7fb904f16f4.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some slightly flattened, petal-shaped Japanese rosy bitterlings, named for their resemblance to flower petals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1375 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924760-2ab7b4f3313bd8d15942e8a55a0c7967-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924760-2ab7b4f3313bd8d15942e8a55a0c7967-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1736924760-2ab7b4f3313bd8d15942e8a55a0c7967.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, due to interbreeding with invasive species, being able to specifically identify a specifically &#8220;Japanese&#8221; rosy bitterling is quite rare!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s really interesting to see the richness of nature at Ezu Lake, but it also raises awareness about the diminishing presence of native species and the concerns surrounding that. There&#8217;s so much to learn from it all.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Summer is the Season of Love for Tanago Fish<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These bitterlings enter their mating season in the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the breeding season, male <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bitterlings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slightly redden their body color to attract females and display dominance to other males.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1376 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s much like birds, where typically males display more vivid colors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This color change is noticeable until about autumn, and today I could clearly see the differences between males and females.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had always thought of river fish as being rather plain, but they are actually quite beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And contrary to their beauty, in the large tank, a fierce battle among the brightly colored males was also a sight to behold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Black Bass Swimming in the Fish Tank!!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panel also does a good job of explaining the negative impacts of invasive species on Lake Ezu&#8217;s ecosystem.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1377 aligncenter\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The black bass, with its large mouth, is a fearsome predator as it can swallow smaller fish whole, posing a serious threat to native species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this facility, even these invasive species are on display.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a largemouth bass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe it thinks it&#8217;s getting fed, or perhaps it sees the camera as food, but they always end up looking directly at you every time you take a photo!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, while their large mouths might seem intimidating, in truth, the invasive species themselves aren&#8217;t to blame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s the fault of humans who brought them in and let them loose.
