Aso\u2019s Takadake and Nakadake Peaks!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve been thinking about starting the Higo Journal mountain climbing club for a year now, but I still haven&#8217;t found anyone to climb with me. I climbed Mt. Nekodake last year, and this year I headed to Mt. Takadake and Mt. Nakadake, aiming to conquer all five peaks of Aso!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Trailhead: Sensuikyo<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensuikyo is a popular spot for tourists, especially in May when the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miyama Kirishima (Kyushu Azaleas)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in full bloom. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miyama Kirishima<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are beautiful alpine flowers found in the volcanic areas of Kyushu that thrive in the wild at altitudes exceeding 1,000 meters. From 1964 to 2010, a ropeway took visitors to the Nakadake Crater, but now only the pillars are left standing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1594 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1740731608-579553f84b60cbafd606b2a45512cc9c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The large parking lot has restroom facilities available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1595 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1740731625-1c1b9123e0a41f69ef9e616d689841fb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find the registration form for mountain climbing here. Today, I am going to hike up Mt. Takadake and Mt. Nakadake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1597 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1740731666-6f3026d8d93d70a081aafd32643f7c22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to volcanic activity, there are times when access within 1 km of the crater is restricted, so please be sure to check in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1598 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1740731683-31cfaee7c3c0689beb30b7011a5f0acb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn&#8217;t possible to get within 1 km of the crater today, I decided to take the route marked by a pink line, which ascends \u201c\u201d and then descends along \u201c\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1599 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530210-d6fea9a5c4a845505a3407cfdfe04f07.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather is nice, but we can see that there are some clouds forming around the peak. Be cautious, since the mountain weather is unpredictable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Heading to Mt. Takadake<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1600 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530297-7c7f3c6d4f92cd1630d758542118eed0.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u201d begins at this bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1601 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530353-182afe8e0520a1d73522220f7a961c26.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving forward from this point, you won&#8217;t have the opportunity to admire the crystal-clear water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1602 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530425-3a718dce4fdf44f567c2bf44d57584b5.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the grassy trail that is indicated by the red cone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1603 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530483-899e2bfac8003871e3b25dde6bc20050.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I followed the yellow arrows spray painted on the rocks and made my way up to the summit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1604 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530638-372700d3ef2d6f939af082f644324f6d.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a certain point, the mountain becomes very rocky, so please remember to bring a gloves with you, and also a hat would be good to protect from the sun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1605 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530747-1503606f22175c4290dcb779f84dac39.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be cautious of the stones spraypainted with the Japanese characters \u201c\u6b62\u307e\u308c\u201d meaning STOP. These indicate that there are dangerous areas beyond that point and instruct climbers to avoid going past them, with the arrow indicating the proper direction. It&#8217;s important to follow these warnings to stay safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1606 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530862-8957e4ca0c92675747958e8bc5a90ae7.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just kept going up and up. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes like hiking boots as there are plenty of rocky outcrops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1607 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720530979-117288432442fd54dae0e68238f39537.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I follow the spraypainted stones that indicate the directions up the path. \u53f3 (migi) indicates to go right, and \u5de6 (hidari) left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1608 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531029-50c991242f8b972e5187442f131c54fb.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve been climbing for two hours and&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1609 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531158-eb98b14bfe733ffb783a03a94cca0e7e.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stone ahead lets me know I\u2019ve only reached the halfway point (\u4e2d\u9593\u70b9, ch\u016bkanten). I still have a long way to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1610 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531105-322badce946a4883abe602bf8c221a93.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning around, I was greeted with a spectacular panoramic view of the Uchinomaki Area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1611 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531299-31860775c0e2a43f77878d74c1f456c2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get closer to the summit, you&#8217;ll see a change in the soil&#8217;s hue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1612 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531396-75e5b45cb6c3f4064b244653b329bbb6.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you&#8217;ve made it up the rocky terrain, you&#8217;ll find a trail that leads to the peak of Mt. Takadake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1613 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531469-fc327ebdffc45c484184faf8afb4a872.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I made it to the top of Mt. Takadake! It took me around 3.5 hours. There were clouds at the peak, but on a sunny day, you can see both the Uchinomaki and Takamori areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1614 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531729-f70b956c7ff6dfb2c545b08417bfdee6.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be mindful of the warning signs that indicate hazardous areas and avoid them<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Time to Cimb Mt. Nakadake<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1615 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531789-af4d87110c6d9b8293968ad9b495b5c8.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I left Takadake and began to approach Nakadake, I was able to catch a glimpse of Aso City through a gap in the clouds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1616 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720531890-fae90acaad1cdb440c6f962ca664fe71.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I reached the top of Mt. Nakadake after a 20-minute hike. You can see smoke billowing out of the crater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1617 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720532004-0722e01174b1937433e9939bbce1a70b.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the crater lies Kusasenri. The sight of the crater from above is incredibly striking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1618 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720532188-639d0469ea2eb12f58355d9528d9bd0f.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll make my way down from the peak of Mt. Nakadake by taking the Hinoo Pass(Suzume-Iwa) Route. As I descended, I admired the stunning rock formations&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1619 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720532364-44e175dfe0f6754d56e4be7a4a1cdf7c.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and made use of theropes placed along the path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1620 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720532435-1911ac00e94ab4b9c9c2012ebec20201.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look out for indicators that will assist you in getting around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1621 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720532659-f8f8d35bc66c87c7e5d8d0387b4a99bf.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The journey from the summit of Mt. Nakadake to the Sensuikyo parking lot lasted about two and a half hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1622 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720532715-f5fb058a8c88cf0ffa6e26b546a31434.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The round trip usually lasts around 6 hours, so it&#8217;s best to begin your climb in the morning, considering the time of sunset.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Wrap Up<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1623 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1720532555-ef34906de1fa69d7db1ec664d7a29ad4.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the journey, I stumbled upon numerous fascinating finds, such as a rock that resembled a cat? Or was it a lion?
