They are the spectacular kofun or burial mounds located in Obara, Yamaga City. I recently had the chance to visit them in person and got a close look at them! Let me share my experience with you!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0Located in Obara, Yamaga City<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no parking available, so I parked where my car won\u2019t be a nuisance and proceed on foot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1626 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1718336327-2c7102f85df55878445c1c927d5a8a7e.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sign marking the historic site on the street serves as a guide to our destination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1627 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1718336441-037c01027bac52159377f0c90173a845.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll take a small path beside a private residence. Let\u2019s go up the stairs!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Eerily Carved Human Figures<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 122 Nagaiwa Kofun located along the Tamana-Yamaga route on Prefectural Route 16, and one of the most well-known ancient tombs is this!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1630 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1718339429-bbbde1c7a084e80e25830f25139a8920.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A human-shaped relief!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m uncertain whether it&#8217;s appropriate to call it scary, but there is something definitely chilling about its unusual yet formidable appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1631 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1718339497-61b7e10f8af3083319a78ef16e1150fb.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chest parts are deeply hollowed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1632 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1718339692-54dae979c619de21720cabb51eb36408.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the 108th tomb, a very famous site also featured in manga, showing a figure with both arms spread wide, holding a quiver with five arrows. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1634 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1718342231-55b5df10de80bc4a803eee458d36a1e2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m looking at this human relief. How were they carved?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1633 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/higojournal.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1718339846-829ab2a6523057bc5b59ee1ff65f794f.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a distance ahead. Make sure to <\/span><b>turn left as soon as you reach the top of the stairs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.This 108th tomb is located on the left side right after the stairs, but the grass was so dense that it was difficult to spot, and we ended up walking quite<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A Row of Stunning Caves<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heading up the stairs and to the right, you&#8217;ll encounter a cluster of holes in the cliff face. I can&#8217;t help but feel in awe of the people of the Kofun period who carved out each of these holes by hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<strong>Summary<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capturing the essence of this power and fear in a photograph is quite challenging, but this site, designated as a historic location by the prefecture, is something I encourage you to experience firsthand. While there are some openings you can explore, accessing them in the summer can be quite tough.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you visit there, watch out for insects and tall grass!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, there are homes nearby, so please be mindful and avoid causing any disturbances.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever heard of Nagaiwa Yokoana Tunnel Tombs?
