Start Your Day Off with a Fancy Breakfast at POMBO in Kokufu, Kumamoto City!!

writer:Haru Haru

Have you ever heard of POMBO, known for serving a delightful breakfast before starting your day or heading out? Despite opening its doors in November 2022, it has already gained immense popularity.

There was a time when I couldn’t enjoy their delicious meals because their restaurant is always a full house, but this time I finally got a chance! So let me share the experience with you.

Opened on November 16th, 2022

It is located near Kyushu Gakuin Lutheran High School along with Densha-Dori (the main street in Kumamoto along which the city tram runs.

You can easily spot the entrance by looking for the charming hand-written signboard and the adorable red doors.

The name “POMBO,” which means pigeon in Portuguese, reflects the owner’s wish for the cafe to be a homely spot that guests return to, much like pigeons remember their home.

Step inside and you’ll find four tables seating four each, as well as six counter seats.

The inviting ambiance created by the warm wood and beautiful ornamental plants will instantly put you at ease.

Here’s the menu!

Bánh mì, Eggs Benedict, and Root Vegetable Cream Soup are the most popular dishes in the morning menu.

The owner told me that she initially ran a popular bánh mì restaurant. Later, she got married to an American chef, which became the perfect opportunity for them to open a restaurant that serves a diverse range of home-cooking favourites from around the world.

The hand-crafted sourdough, which is utilized in their dishes like Toast with Eggs, can be purchased individually for a mere 150 yen! Additionally, you have the option to pair it with the delightful Root Vegetable Cream Soup.

They ask each customer to order at least one drink. Here’s the drink menu.

You can indulge in alcohol at any time of the day as they offer it all day long. So, if you feel like having a drink in the morning, go ahead! Apparently, some people work while sipping on a glass of wine.

I noticed that they have a delightful menu that changes daily on every table. So, I was thinking, it might be nice to come back and make use of this place as a cozy café next time.

Let’s try their meals!

This time, I ordered Eggs Benedict and a cup of coffee.

The coffee, fruity and refreshing, was just what I needed to kickstart my day. Made with beans sourced from Gluck Coffee Spot, a hidden gem tucked away in the alley behind Kamitori in Kumamoto City. What makes it even better is that the barista who brews this delightful coffee is also a member of the talented team at Gluck Coffee Spot! That’s why it tastes so good!

Then, here’s the main dish Eggs Benedict!

Wow, it’s incredibly tempting! I’m torn between savoring and capturing its deliciousness in a picture.

But once you put a cut in…

Look at this runny egg!!

It was incredibly delicious, making it effortless for me to finish it off, despite not being a breakfast person.

By the way, if you want to avoid waiting for a long time, make sure to drop by here between 8 a.m. and just before lunchtime. This is because on weekdays, people tend to leave the restaurant before their commute.

I dropped by the restaurant at around 9:00 a.m. on a weekday morning. Initially, there was only one couple who arrived before me, but as time passed, more and more customers started coming in. Before we knew it, all the seats were occupied.

I heard that they do not accept reservations, so consider yourself fortunate if you manage to secure a spot!!

Nonetheless, the restaurant was so fantastic that the journey was absolutely worth it.

We hope you give it a try, whether you prefer a lavish breakfast or a laid-back café experience!
