A Neighborhood That Balances Convenience and Nostalgia—Shinmachi

Shinmachi may be a little removed from Kumamoto’s city center and train station, but it’s surprisingly convenient, with plenty of buses and streetcars running through.

It’s only about a 10-minute walk from Sakuramachi (a large shopping center and Kumamoto’s main bus terminal), making it a great location.

This area has preserved its old-town charm, offering a sense of warmth and nostalgia that makes you feel right at home.

As I wandered through Shinmachi, I stumbled upon a liquor store called “Kumamoto Fukushiroya Saketen”.

And guess what? You can actually drink alcohol inside the store. Even in the morning.

An Impressive Selection!

Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by rows upon rows of alcohol.

They even have international beers.

Not just that― there are snacks, and sometimes even antique goods on display.

The place is so well-organized and visually appealing that you could spend ages just browsing.

And get this—

—they have a cellar room too!

It’s a treasure trove of wine and sake!

There are plenty of rare finds, including elegant wines and beautifully labeled sake bottles.

Here you can see some bottles of sake with cute labels!

Of course, they carry a great selection of Kumamoto’s locally brewed sake including  Kameman (亀萬), Kouro (香露), Reizan (れいざん) and Chiyo-no-Sono (千代の園).

Oh, and check this out—frozen drinks! You can choose between alcoholic or non-alcoholic options.

Since we’re here, let’s have a drink!

The store opens at 9 AM, so if you want to start early, go right ahead. They don’t just serve draft beer—you can also get highballs, wine, and sake!

First up—draft craft beer! They had two options to choose from.

They have tables and chairs outside of the shop where you can enjoy your drinks right on site.

I got a generously poured craft beer for just 500 yen.

Under this gorgeous sky, I raise my glass― cheers!

It doesn’t get better than this.

Next, I tried one of their on- tap offerings.

They actually have four different kinds on tap!

When you order, you’ll receive a drink ticket.

Then, they’ll pour a huge glass of beer for you.

And they do it with incredible care.

They even take extra steps to remove any unpleasant foam residue, making sure you get the best possible taste.

Paired with some snacks I bought in the store, this is the ultimate indulgence.

Enjoying a cold beer under the sun in such a relaxed atmosphere… pure bliss!

No Way We’re Not Drinking! Daytime Beers, Here We Come!

Kumamoto Fukushiroya Saketen is primarily a liquor wholesaler supplying alcohol to restaurants, but retail shoppers are more than welcome as well. Even better—you can drink on-site and even sample some of the products!

You can buy snacks inside, or even bring your own!

With easy access via streetcar or bus, it’s a super convenient place to drop by for a casual drink. Since they open early in the morning, it’s also ideal for daytime drinking.
